Benefits of Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil

Benefits of Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil

Oil pulling is a natural folk remedy from India that involves swishing oil in the mouth. It has become increasingly popular in other regions for its purported health benefits.
Oil pulling with coconut oil is easy to fit into a regular oral health routine. Coconut oil is available at grocery stores and online, and people do not need any additional ingredients.

In this article, learn about what oil pulling is, how to do oil pulling with coconut oil, and about the possible benefits and risks.

What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an oral health routine that involves swishing oil around in the mouth in a similar way to mouthwash, but for a much more extended period.

Coconut oil is a highly absorbable oil with several health benefits, including reducing inflammation and fighting harmful bacteria. It is also edible, so has few risks for oral use.

Most supporters of oil pulling recommend swishing a tablespoon of oil in the mouth for 15–20 minutes to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth and on the teeth.

Benefits
Benefits of oil pulling with coconut oil may include:

Killing harmful bacteria in the mouth
The mouth contains hundreds of bacteria, some of which are harmful and may lead to tooth decay, bad breath, and gum disease.

According to a 2016 study on 60 participants, oil pulling can reduce the number of bacteria found in the saliva and can help support proper oral hygiene. The authors stated that coconut oil was a safe alternative to chlorhexidine, which is an ingredient in some mouthwashes.

Reducing bad breath
Bad breath is generally due to poor oral hygiene, tongue coating, infection, or gum disease as a result of bacteria buildup.

According to a 2011 study, oil pulling may be an effective natural alternative for bad breath and may work as well as traditional treatment with chlorhexidine.

Preventing cavities
Cavities stem from tooth decay as a result of bacteria buildup, poor oral hygiene, and consuming too much sugar.

Plaque can also cause cavities by forming a coating of bacteria, saliva, and food particles on the teeth that can damage the enamel.

According to 2016 research, oil pulling may decrease the number of harmful bacteria in the mouth, possibly helping to prevent cavities. In addition to brushing and flossing, this can be another way to achieve optimal oral health.

Reducing inflammation and improving gum health
The bacteria in plaque may lead to gingivitis, which is a common gum disease characterized by red, swollen, and inflamed gums that bleed easily.

Research suggests that coconut oil can reduce inflammation. This may benefit oral health and inflammation in the mouth.

According to a small 2015 study, oil pulling with coconut oil reduced plaque and could help prevent plaque-induced gingivitis.

Whitening teeth
Although there is no scientific evidence to confirm that oil pulling can whiten teeth, anecdotal evidence suggests it may clear stains from the surface of the teeth. There is little risk in trying to whiten teeth in this way.

Risks and considerations
It is not safe for people with allergies to coconuts or coconut oil to try this technique. Otherwise, there are no known risks for oil pulling with coconut oil.

Oil pulling does not replace brushing one's teeth, flossing, and other oral care techniques.

How to do an oil pull
coconut oil is a good type of saturated fat
After an oil pull, spit coconut oil into the garbage and not into the sink or toilet.
To do an oil pull with coconut oil, place a tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth. Those who do not like the taste of coconut oil can use other oils, such as sesame oil or olive oil.

Sit upright and swish the coconut oil around the mouth for 15–20 minutes. People who have difficulty keeping the coconut oil in their mouth for this length of time can start with 5 or 10 minutes and slowly increase the duration. It is essential to keep swishing and to breathe through the nose.

Once done, spit the oil in the garbage. Avoid spitting into the sink or toilet, as it can lead to clogging. Do not swallow the coconut oil.

Most recommendations suggest brushing the teeth immediately after an oil pull. However, some people believe that it is better not to brush right away to allow the retention of good bacteria and the re-balancing of the oral microbiome.

Either way, proponents recommend using a separate toothbrush after oil pulling to the one used for daily teeth cleaning.

Takeaway
Existing scientific studies support some benefits of oil pulling with coconut oil, but there is not enough evidence to determine whether it is effective.

However, oil pulling is a simple, affordable, and generally safe technique to add to an existing oral health routine.

Angst that Buying Halaal Food Could Fund Islam

Angst that buying halaal food could fund Islam

Concerns have been raised, especially from Christians, that buying halaal or kosher foods amounts to funding religions.

The concerns have been raised with the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL commission), which hosted a seminar on the subject on Thursday.

Religious leaders and commissioners were faced with questions about whether the certification of products by religious groups did not amount to denying other consumers the freedom to choose non-certified products.

Journalist Vicky Abraham addressed the commission and said Christians had raised concerns about the number of products certified halaal.

In a City Press report in April, Abraham reported that the CRL commission was "flooded" with complaints from Christians, laced with Islamophobic sentiment, complaining that "most" items in chain supermarkets were halaal.

Some complainants reportedly said they objected to eating something "sacrificed to idols", eating and drinking goods used to fund terrorism, or inadvertently adhering to Sharia law. Abraham said that 80 to 90% of the products in stores were certified halaal.

But South African National Halaal Association (Sanha) halaal certification office manager, Mufti Mohammed Yusuf Seedat, was at pains to explain that the certification fees paid by food manufacturers and retailers were used solely for Sanha's purposes.

Sanha's adited financial results for the year ending February 2017 stated that the association's income for that year was R22m - mostly received from service fees. It's expenditure was about R21m and most of the amount went towards staffing costs, travel expenses, the training of personnel to export certified products to Gulf states, and other running costs.

In short, the money Sanha receives from retailers, restaurants and manufacturers who pay halaal certification fees does not go towards building mosques, financing terrorism, or subsidising Islam.

Another Muslim attendee said the only reason for having food certified halaal was to ensure that those who wanted to keep to the prescripts of Islam could do so.

Similarly, Kosher Department of the Beth Din head Rabbi Dovi Goldstein said the it was a non-profit organisation and certification fees received were also mostly used for running costs. He said kosher food was one of the fastest-growing food trends in the world due to the belief that the way the food was prepared was cleaner and more humane.

He said more than 450 companies, 30 000 products and 70 000 ingredients were certified with the diamond-shaped "BD" symbol. Goldstein said that kosher was a set of "technical standards" set out by the Torah.

For example, the slaughter of animals is "very specific", he said, to ensure cleanliness and humaneness. As part of its staff complement, the kosher department has 75 supervisors - permanent and part time - at manufacturers around the country, he said.

Convenor of the Shuddha Committee of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, Mala Sarupdeo, said the purpose of having foods certified under the Shuddha lotus flower symbol was to protect the rights of Hindus.

She said that if someone was fasting, for example, it would violate their rights to practice their religion freely if Shuddha-certified foods were not available.

"I have been to these kitchens and 99% of fast foots outlets and manufacturers don't respect the rights of consumers. It's about protecting the rights of the consumer - not promoting a particular religion," said Sarupdeo.

She said that Shuddha-certified food was strictly vegetarian and contained no animal products at all. The food and packaging must not be related to any animal cruelty or animal testing, and must not have come into contact with alcohol.

While a number of foods are Shuddha certified, Sarupdeo said the list needed to be longer, but there was a lack of awareness among manufacturers.

Professor Alice Chan, representing the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple, said that Buddhists encouraged vegetarianism but there was no strict rule about it. She said because of this, Buddhists had no certification symbol of their own.

Chan said that Buddhists discouraged the ingestion of the five "pungent herbs" - garlic, onions, scallions, leeks and chives. She said they were considered aphrodisiacs and could also cause bad breath that "offends other people".

Chan said that if she was to eat meat, if would be kosher or halaal "because I'm sure the animals were treated humanely" and as a vegetarian, she would support Shuddha products.

Why are so many products certified halaal?

Seedat said that the number of products certified halaal was so high because of the unseen animal products used in so many foods.

He said animal by-products were used in some breads and baking premixes. Some yoghurts used gelatin as a stabiliser, and even red colourant in desserts could come from crushed insects. Some hypo-allergenic baby formulas contain pork enzymes, while wine gums and even apple juice can contain gelatin. Even basting brushes can contain porcine hair, Seedat said.

The reason why so many water bottles need to be certified halaal is because some carbon filters used to purify bottled water contain carbon sourced from animals, he said.

Even the casings of pill capsules and wax covering toothpicks can contain animal products and need to be certified halaal, he said.

The Top 5 Smile Complaints—And How To Fix Them

The Top 5 Smile Complaints—And How To Fix Them

New York City cosmetic dentist Dr. Husam Almunajed of Empire Dental Aesthetics sees patients of all ages from all walks of life who seek his help to improve their smile.
Ranging from minor easy-to-fix concerns to serious problems that require more extensive restoration work, he reveals the most common complains he hears from patients.

A healthy, good-looking smile is ageless, and as important at 60 as it is at 16. Dental treatment takes a comprehensive approach to both the function and appearance of the smile, and making a commitment to oral wellness is a smart investment that can impact emotional health at any stage of life as well. However very few people are born with a naturally perfect smile, which is why general and cosmetic dentistry are so important.

Consider the fact that 48 percent of Americans ages 18-24 have un-tagged a picture of themselves on Facebook because they didn’t like their smile … Tooth colour and alignment may be the first things you notice about your own or someone else’s smile, but you may be surprised at the other top reasons patients seek the help of their dentist for.

Discoloration
Tooth colour can be dictated by genetics, or affected by diet, lifestyle habits (such as smoking), injury or even a history of taking certain antibiotics. The good news is, this can be one of the easiest smile complaints to fix. In-office teeth whitening uses a bleaching agent to erase many types of stains, and optimal results can often be achieved in one treatment (along with at-home maintenance). The exception is stains caused by tetracycline, which require veneers or other restorations to essentially recreate a more aesthetically pleasing shade. Veneers may also be a better means of brightening the smile in patients who have yellow-based stains along with one or more of the other complaints below.

Disproportionate Tooth Size and Shape
This common patient concern can range from uneven tooth length and chips to countless other situations in between. The ideal cosmetic treatment for restoring proper proportions depends on the patient’s unique needs, and options generally include cosmetic contouring to reduce excess length, bonding to restore proper shape and veneers in cases when a tooth requires more extensive repair.

Tooth Position and Spacing
Orthodontic treatment is often the go-to for improving the position and spacing of the teeth, and braces, Invisalign or more extensive techniques may be necessary when the function of the jaws or teeth are affected. Many patients are surprised to learn that many position and spacing issues can be treated with cosmetic dentistry when function isn’t an issue. Bonding can be used to close gaps between the teeth, while veneers can essentially give the smile a makeover in just a few appointments as opposed to years of orthodontic treatment.

Sensitivity
Sensitive teeth are usually caused by worn-down tooth enamel or exposed roots. Many dentists will recommend a special toothpaste or fluoride treatments for home use, but severe cases may require an in-office treatment. Bonding can be used to reinforce sensitive spots, and veneers can help rebuild one or more teeth to ensure vulnerable areas are protected. If these procedures are unable to address the source of sensitivity, a gum graft can be used to cover exposed roots and restore comfort.

Bad Breath
Bad breath isn’t always caused by a lack of oral care, and other causes include dry mouth, gum disease, medical conditions and even certain medications. The first step in treating bad breath is identifying the source, and small lifestyle changes may be able to provide improvement. Addressing gum disease with Periodontic treatment or managing other health conditions with the help of an appropriate medical specialist can stop unpleasant breath and prevent the self-consciousness that often accompanies this complaint.

Why bad breath could be an early sign of heart disease

Heart disease is Britain's biggest killer, and sleepless nights and living near a busy road are just some of the factors known to up your risk.
Every seven minutes someone in the UK has a heart attack, while 160,000 a year die from heart and circulatory disease, express.co.uk reported.

However, Dr. Paul Stillman, a GP, said, "There are a lot of ways that we can do to be alert to the risks and protect against cardiac issues".

Some risk factors — such as obesity, lack of exercise and smoking — are well known, but recent research has revealed some more unexpected clues to cardiac risk.

For instance, bleeding gums and bad breath could be early indicators.

Dr. Nigel Carter, of the British Dental Health Foundation, said, “The link between oral health and overall body health is well documented and backed by robust scientific evidence.

Despite this, only one in six people realizes that people with gum disease may have an increased risk of stroke or diabetes. And only one in three is aware of the heart disease link.

Stillman explained, “Inflammation disrupts the outer surface of the gums and allows bacteria to penetrate the bloodstream.

It’s no accident that one of the bacteria commonly associated with periodontal disease, Streptococcus sanguinis, is also implicated in coronary heart disease.

While regular dental check-ups can target this, it's worth being aware of the key heart disease triggers too — and how you can lower your risk.

Shift work and insomnia contribute to cardiac problems, with one large study suggesting that working night shifts for ten years increased the odds of coronary heart disease by 27 percent.

Similarly, research which combined the findings of 15 previous studies involving more than 160,000 people — identified significant associations between insomnia and heart disease.

Stillman said, “Sleep is important because it gives the body a chance to heal and repair, but previous studies have shown that lack of rest can also increase blood pressure and elevate levels of inflammatory markers and other body chemicals which are known to increase the odds of cardiovascular disease".

Shift work has also been shown to raise blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease or stroke.

If you work shifts, it is important to look at other ways, such as diet, exercise and nutritional supplements which can offset the danger".

Try taking a good quality garlic supplement. Make sure you are getting plenty of magnesium, potassium and B-vitamins and there is also good evidence that omega-3 fatty acids protect against coronary heart disease.

Take a good look at your diet and how you could improve it. Can you eat more whole grains and more fruit and vegetables? Aim to eat oily fish at least once a week.

Additionally, increasing dietary potassium and magnesium, alongside salt reduction, can be as effective as prescription pills at reducing hypertension.

Brad Marchand Hilariously Gets Offer From Mentos After Licking Leo Komarov’s Neck

Brad Marchand Hilariously Gets Offer From Mentos After Licking Leo Komarov’s Neck
by Logan Mullen

BOSTON — Brad Marchand’s, let’s call it special, moment with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komorav grabbed the attention of many, including a mint company. The Boston Bruins winger gave the Leafs forward a lick on the neck during Game 1 of the two teams’ first-round Stanley Cup playoff series, which was followed up by a hilarious explanation as to why he did it. After Saturday’s morning skate, Marchand joked that all the Leafs now know he has bad breath, which prompted a reporter to reply that he could have a few Mentos. The B’s winger responded with “I love Mentos,” as he walked away. Mentos caught word of his comments, and tried striking a little deal with him.

Excellent product placement. We’ll see if Marchand has any more tricks up his sleeve for Saturday’s Game 2.

10 Dangerous Side Effects Of Ketosis

10 Dangerous Side Effects Of Ketosis

People on weight loss regime often resort to eating a diet low in carbohydrates. The Institute of Medicine says that around 45 to 65% of a person’s daily calories come from carbs. A low-carb diet is designed in a way that it creates a deficiency of carbs in the body in order to encourage it to switch to a different fuel source. This eventually leads to significant weight loss and also stabilises blood sugar. Side effects of reducing carb intake can be experienced during the initial phase of low-carb diet.
On eating a low-carb diet, also known as a keto diet, a process called ketosis occurs in the body. It happens when ketones build in the blood stream. Low levels of carbs in the body result in a drop in blood sugar levels. This in turn leads to breaking down of fat in order to use energy.
However, a low-carb diet is considered to be beneficial and safe but only when it is continued for a short term. In the long term, ketosis and carbohydrate deficiency can be dangerous for the body.

Read below to know the side effects of ketosis:

1. Erosion of bones
A major side effect of ketosis is bone erosion. To be in ketosis, you tend to reduce consumption of calcium. You eliminate carb containing fibres. Fibres contain crucial phytochemicals such phytic acid, oxalates and tannins and this is the reason why gut refuses to absorb calcium. This leads to weakened bones and you become more prone to fractures.

2. Leg cramps
To get in ketosis, you eliminate sources of important nutrients and minerals which are required for proper functioning of muscles. These minerals include potassium, calcium and sodium amongst others. Not being careful about getting these minerals from low-carb foods, can make your leg muscles cramp.

3. Fatigue
When your body is in a state of ketosis, it makes you feel extremely tired and fatigue. This because the body works hard in order to use alternative source of energy apart from glucose. Workout routine suffers too when you’re on ketosis. In order to fight the lethargy and fatigue, you need to increase your intake of water and salts.

4. Disturbed menstrual cycle
Following a low-carb diet makes you lose a lot of weight. Your body remains under stress most of the time this can disrupt your menstrual cycle. In some extreme cases, you can also experience amenorrhea which refers to complete absence of periods.

5. Kidney stones
Another side effect of ketosis is that it reduces your blood pH levels, this making your blood acidic. Acidic blood causes waste products in the blood to crystallise in kidneys and form kidney stones.

6. Bad breath
When on ketosis, you will get bad breath. This is because break down fat releases certain chemicals which cause bad breath.

7. Constipation and hunger
You become constipated when your body is in ketosis because fibrous foods such as whole grains, beans and legumes all contain carbohydrates. Fibre is the most important component which makes you feel full for longer and ensures smooth bowel movement. Being in ketosis means skipping foods rich in fibre which makes you constipated and hungry.

8. Dehydration
Being in a state of ketosis leads to excess build-up of ketones in the body. Excess ketones can be harmful health and are passed through the body via urine. Excessive sodium in the body is also passed through urine when your body is in ketosis. Excess urination can cause dehydration in the body.

9. Anxiety and headaches
A few days into the low-carb diet and you will begin to experience splitting headache. This happens because your brain prefers running on glucose and burns the last stores of glucose before it switches to ketones for energy. You tend to feel anxious and experience difficulty in concentration as the brain is constantly focusing on using an alternative source of energy.

10. Easy bruising
Ketosis can change your blood composition and lower your platelet count. It can also affect functioning of platelets that can make you get easily bruised. Hence, as long as you are following the low-carb diet with caution and keeping sure of your nutrient intake, it is safe to follow it in the short term.

Kelly Osbourne can't Stand Bad Breath, Tweets her Displeasure

As a rule, Kelly Osbourne says whatever she feels like. This is probably why she co-hosts Fashion Police, a show in which she and Joan Rivers blast Hollywood stars and starlets for their odd or revealing choices of dress. It’s may also be why she has no problem unleashing on people with bad breath.

Recently, Osbourne tweeted her disgust with having to sniff oral odor, especially when it’s up close and personal.

#IHate people that are close talkers!” she wrote on the social media site. “No i don’t want to feel your hot breath in my face while talking thank you very much!”

On the same day (July 26, 2012), Osbourne blew off some more steam about the kinds of contortions she has to go through just to get away from the smell of bad breath.

“I spend most convos turning my head like the ****ing exorcist searching for a pocked [sic] of halitosis free air! it makes me look like a nutter!” she said, misspelling a bit in her rage.
This isn’t the first time the singer and fashion designer has expressed her displeasure with other people’s oral funk. In 2011, she tweeted: “Bad breath is better than no breath at all. #JustDontTalkSoCloseToMyFace

Can you blame her for hating halitosis? It must be especially tough to deal with bad breath when you spend so much of your day talking with people face to face.

So, other than turning their heads around backwards, how can people like Osbourne break it to others that they have a case of halitosis? Well, besides saying it right out, you can always subtly offer a specialty, sugar-free, oxygenating breath mint.

These products neutralize odor, taste great and get the point across immediately. Or, if you have the person’s email address, you can send an anonymous, virtual breath mint from TheraBreath here.

Glass of Milk Fights Garlic Odor Research Says

Scientist in a new study claims that drinking a glass of milk helps battle the lingering aroma of garlic in mouth.

The Journal of Food Science of the Researchers at Ohio State University stated that both non-fat and whole milk could counteract the chemical components of garlic that gives its strong smell. Garlic is used worldwide because of its pungent flavor as seasoning. Its flavor differs in strength and aroma with the different cooking techniques.

Researchers stated that to achieve the optimum effect, sip milk while munching garlic at the same time. It is more effective when you mix garlic and milk in the mouth before swallowing than drinking milk after eating garlic.

The allyl methyl sulphide (AMS) is the chemical found in garlic that milk counteracts. It is a metabolite of garlic and responsible for the “garlic odor”. In the process of metabolizing garlic, AMS is absorbed in the blood, travels through the lungs and skin, and exudes in skin pores.

AMS is not broken down in the process of digestion thus, it is released in the form of sweat and gas. Studies say that garlic protects against cancer, urinary tract infections, and common colds. However, it can cause body odor and bad breath that lasts for hours and worst even for days.

Milk contains large amounts of saturated fat, protein and calcium as well as vitamin C.

Sheryl Barringer and Areerat Hansanugrum, authors of the study also suggest the use of plain water, mushrooms and basil to offset the effect of garlic in breath. On the other hand, combinations of fat and water found in milk has greater efficacy.

Barringer also sad that beverages and other food rich in water and fat content helps mask the flavor of garlic and eliminates the possibility of bad breath.

Denture Wearers Risk Oral Infections

Denture wearers may find it a daunting task to clean their dental appliances every single day. However, failure to do so could result in an oral environment that is a perfect breeding ground for many microbes, including some that cause bad breath.

In fact, studies have shown that the oral fungus Candida albicans - a type of yeast - grows particularly well on acrylic surfaces, such as those found in many dentures. When these appliances are poorly maintained, the fungus thrives.

"Very rarely, however, do people suspect that the bad condition of removable dentures and other dental appliances such as retainers and mouth guards may, besides bad breath, also cause serious mouth-related and general health problems," wrote Margaret Slubowski in Coquitlam Now.

She added that it can be difficult to properly clean dental appliances with traditional, commercially available oral care products, and that microbes that are left behind may transfer to the person's mouth.

Denture wearers may benefit from specialty breath freshening products, which are often able to kill a greater number of harmful dental microbes than traditional toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Tobacco - Causes Majority of Health Problems

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States.

Each year, cigarette smoking results in an estimated 443,000 premature deaths, of which about 49,400 are in non-smokers, as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke.

Cigarette smoke is a complex mixture of chemicals produced by the burning of tobacco and the additives.

The smoke contains tar, which is made up of more than 4,000 chemicals, including more than 60 known to cause cancer. Some of these substances cause heart and lung diseases, and all of them can be deadly.

In large doses, nicotine is a poison and can kill by stopping a person's breathing muscles. Nicotine can make new smokers, and regular smokers who get too much of it, feel dizzy or sick to their stomachs.

The resting heart rate for young smokers increases 2 to 3 beats per minute.

Nicotine also lowers skin temperature and reduces blood flow to the legs and feet.

Tobacco use accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking is attributed to about 87 percent of lung cancer deaths.

Smoking also causes cancer of larynx (voice box), mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube), and bladder, and contributes to the development of cancer of the pancreas, cervix, kidney and stomach.

Smoking is also linked to the development of some types of leukemia. Cigars, pipes, spit, and other types of smokeless tobacco all cause cancers, too. Despite many myths, there is no safe way to use tobacco.

Smoking also causes many short-term effects, such as poor lung function. Because of this, smokers often suffer shortness of breath and nagging coughs. They often will tire easily during physical activity.

Some other common short-term effects include less ability to smell and taste, premature aging of the skin, bad breath and stained teeth and fingers.

Long term, smoking is a major cause of heart disease, aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema and stroke, and it makes pneumonia and asthma worse.

Wounds take longer to heal and the immune system may be less effective in smokers than in nonsmokers.

Smoking also damages the arteries. Vascular surgeons may refuse to operate on patients with peripheral artery disease (poor blood circulation in arms and legs) unless they stop smoking.

Chronic bronchitis is a disease in which the airways produce too much mucus, forcing the smoker to cough it out. It is a common problem for smokers. The lungs start to produce large amount of mucus due to lung irritation.

The airways become inflamed and the cough becomes chronic. With chronic bronchitis, airways get blocked by scars and mucus, therefore serious infections can result.

Emphysema is a disease that slowly destroys a person's ability to breathe.

Oxygen reaches the blood by moving across a large surface area in the lungs. Normally, thousands of tiny sacs make up this surface area.

With emphysema, the walls between the sac break down and create larger but fewer sacs. This decreases the lung surface area, which lowers the amount of oxygen reaching the blood.

Over time, the lung surface area can become so small that a person with emphysema often must gasp for breath.

More than 7 million current and former smokers suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the name used to describe both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is the fourth leading cause of death in Americans.

The late stage of chronic lung disease is one of the most severe of all medical conditions. It creates a feeling of gasping for breath all the time - much like the feeling of drowning.

Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of heart disease, which is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.

Cigarette smoking is the biggest risk factor for sudden death from a heart attack.

Cigarette smoke can harm the heart at very low levels, even when the amount is too low to cause lung damage.

The truth is that cigarette smokers die younger than non-smokers.

About half of all the people who continue to smoke will die because of the habit.

In the United States, tobacco causes nearly one in five deaths, killing 443,000 Americans each year. Smoking is the single more preventable cause of death in our society.

That Romantic Dinner's Not Necessarily Good For You

Do dating and good nutrition go together? Perhaps not, according to a recent study by Cornell University's psychology department.

The study, ``Dating and Eating: Beliefs and Dating Foods Among University Students,'' was not intended to measure health or nutrition factors, but to clarify date food etiquette. But we may glean some insight from it as we weigh menu choices.

The study, published in the journal Appetite, surveyed 301 Cornell undergraduate students who were asked which type of foods or meals they considered most and least desirable in dating situations.

Confirming the researchers' hypothesis, salad and vegetables rated highest among women as dating foods. Surprising was that a greater percentage of men chose pasta over meat as a dating food. The most frequently consumed beverage was alcohol, and sushi was the most commonly eaten ethnic food.

Knowing the characteristics of desirable dating foods can help a budding relationship -- and here again was a gender difference. The most important factor for women is that a food not be messy (so, no pasta for them), while for men it was that a food be romantic/aphrodisiac. Other top reasons to avoid certain entrees, cited by the students: if they are cheap, cause bad breath, are unattractive to eat (think corn on the cob) or uncomfortable. I think this last one means they cause gas.

Unfortunately, many foods that contribute to good health and vitality might be lumped under ``non-dating'' foods. Garlic and onions, for example, are both members of the allium family, and have antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. If worried about your breath, eat the parsley garnish on your plate. Besides being loaded with antioxidants, the chlorophyll in the leaves neutralizes bad breath.

Cooked spinach is loaded with vitamins A, K, iron and potassium, but might be skipped in a first date because researchers noted an aversion to ``foods that drip, drop, stick or leave residues that repulse partners.'' My suggestion here is, spinach salad has the same nutrition without the tooth-hugging component.

And foods that may be thought of as gassy such as cabbage, broccoli and beans, are also among the healthiest. You can build up a tolerance by eating them at least a few times a week, or try some Beano.

There are healthy alternatives for many ``nondate'' foods. Send me your food questions and I'll answer in a future column.

When it comes to beauty, women will spend thousands and deal with all sorts of pain. However we tend to be incredibly neglectful with our dental health. Many women won’t miss a hair appointment come hell or high water, but haven’t gotten their teeth checked in years. The only tooth-related matter that seems to be popular is whitening. Unfortunately, there are way more serious problems that can happen with your teeth if you don’t get that yearly check up.

Plaque Build Up

Brushing your teeth gets rid of plaque on the front back and top of your teeth. However the spaces in between will accumulate plaque if you don’t properly floss twice a day. Be careful when you floss not to cut your gums. The bacteria in your mouth could infect the open wound.

Bad Breath(Halitosis)

Chronic bad breath often goes undiagnosed due to the popularity of breath mints and chewing gum. However, halitosis could be the result of a more serious condition. Don’t just cover up that bad breath. If it seems to be habitual see your dentist about it.

Bleeding Gums

Many people notice a little blood after brushing. While this could be attributed to vigorous brushing, it usually indicates a gum disease like Gingivitis. Bring it up to your dentist during your twice yearly visit. You may prevent serious teeth problems that could be costly and painful to fix.

Gung Ho For Gilroy, California's Garlic Festival

For fans of bad breath and wacky food combinations, the Gilroy Garlic Festival is like a mecca. The event, which started 30 years ago, has now turned into one of the country’s largest food festivals. Last year over 100,000 fans headed to Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, California to check out what’s new and unique in the world of garlic cooking and garlic products.

Make sure you skip breakfast, because you’ll need a lot of room to sample all the offerings in Gourmet Alley. Garlic bread, garlic fries, and stuffed mushrooms are just some of the halitosis-inducing foods awaiting you and your crew. If you like what you taste, plenty of cooking demonstrations will teach you how to make your favorites when you return home. Just leave a little bit of room for dessert, because of course there’s garlic ice cream too.

In terms of festival entertainment, Top Chef competitor Fabio Viviani will be on hand during the festival to host the Garlic Showdown competition. Four chefs from the Bay Area will do their best to create taste sensations in an Iron-Chef style cooking shootout. If cooking isn't your thing, there'll also be plenty of music to keep you going throughout the day, and the Miss Gilroy Garlic Queen will be around to say hello—she won't mind your bad breath.

Admission will set you back $12, which we feel is a little pricey. However, since you’ll likely be driving—Gilroy, California is about 30 minutes south of San Jose—parking is free. This year’s festival is July 24-26, but it’s always the last full weekend in July, just in case you want to start planning for the 2010 festival.

Astronauts Wanted - No Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Those to follow Nie Haisheng into space must have impeccable dental hygiene
Would-be astronauts competing for China's next space programme must comply with 100 rules - excluding those with bad breath or a runny nose.

The list, intended to recruit "super human beings", also prohibits those with body odours, tooth cavities or scars which may "burst open" in space.

China will launch a space module next year and hopes for a docking by 2011.

But aspiring "taikonauts" will get nowhere without marital approval. Wives get the final say under the new rules.

"Bad body odour will affect fellow colleagues in the narrow confines of a space shuttle" - Shi Bing Bing, air force doctor

If a would-be astronaut's spouse does not like the idea of them going into space they must remain on earth.

Shi Bing Bing, a doctor at the 454th Air Force Hospital in Nanjing, eastern China, said the new rules will help China send the best of the best into space.

"Bad body odour will affect fellow colleagues in the narrow confines of a space shuttle," he said.

"These astronauts could be regarded as super human beings."

Mr Shi's hospital has now carried out a first screening of candidates to weed out those who fell foul of the 100 rules.

A further two screenings will whittle hopefuls down to the small band who will follow in the footsteps of China's space pioneers, chosen in 1997.

Any candidate with a history of serious illness in the last three generations of their family is barred.

Pleasant Disposition

Also prohibited are those with drug allergies or ringworm.

Successful candidates must possess a "pleasant and adaptable disposition", the guidelines make clear.

China put its first person into space in 2003, while Zhai Zhigang, the son of a snack seller, carried out the first Chinese spacewalk last year.

The country's long-term goal is to build its own space station orbiting earth.

Man sues Kimberly-Clark, Claims Copycat Bad Breath Device

BOSTON, July 7 (Reuters) - A Boston-area inventor sued Kimberly-Clark Corp (KMB.N) on Tuesday, contending that the maker of Kleenex tissues and Huggies diapers had violated his patent for a device to detect bad breath.

The man, Marv Freadman of Chelsea, Massachusetts, filed a lawsuit in Boston federal court, saying that the Dallas-based consumer-products maker is developing a "visual indicating device for bad breath."

The device, Freadman said in court papers, works by detecting carbon dioxide and other gases given off by the bacteria that cause bad breath. Freadman said that he had already patented a similar device.

The Dallas-based company has its own later patent on the device, according to court papers.

The suit asks the court to stop Kimberly-Clark from using the technology and also seeks unspecific monetary damages.

A spokesman for Kimberly-Clark was not immediately available for comment.

The case number is 09-1145 in U.S. District Court in Boston. (Reporting by Scott Malone in Boston and Jessica Wohl in Chicago; Editing Bernard Orr)

No Need to Take Chances Regarding Bad Breath (Halitosis)

If you ever have talked to someone who has bad breath, you know it is a problem. And it may make you wonder: What if I have bad breath? How can I know?

There are three common reasons for Bad Breath (Halitosis):

1/ a person consumes smelly products
2/ a person has a large number of smelly bacteria in his or her mouth
3/ a person has dental or medical problems so severe it is causing a bad smell.

The first two reasons are the most common. The third requires professional attention.

Civilized people will accept two kinds of breath in people: neutral, smell-free breath, or minty breath. Anything else falls into the bad breath category.

Your first defense against this kind of bad breath is to avoid products that cause it. If you cannot avoid, then you need to eliminate or mask the smells. A breath mint or gum is the easiest way. Brushing your teeth and your tongue also can help.

The other cause of bad breath is bacteria that naturally live in your mouth.

Your mouth is a warm, wet environment suited for bacteria. These bacteria eat, drink and excrete. Much of what they excrete smells bad because it contains sulfur compounds. These bacteria are the cause of "morning breath.”

The best way to fight this form of bacterial halitosis is to eliminate the bacteria, a never-ending job because the bacteria are always coming back. Your first defense is brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day. You also need to brush your tongue, since its bumpy surface can harbor bacteria. Antibacterial mouthwash may be helpful. If you need to do more to mask the smells, sugar-free breath mints or sugar-free gum can help; avoid sugar because sugar is food for the bacteria.

How is Your Breath?

YOUR DENTIST AND YOU

How is your breath? Not sure? No doubt each of us has, at some point, unwittingly had bad breath (halitosis) only to be subsequently embarrassed by the reactions of others in response to it.

For any individual, the exact status of their own breath can be difficult to ascertain. Since noses tend to filter out and ignore background odours, it filters out and ignores the quality of our own breath. This means that it is quite possible for a person to have bad breath, yet not be aware of it.

If our noses can't reliably help us judge the quality of our own breath, how can we determine if we do have bad breath?

One solution is to ask the opinion of a spouse or significant other. If you don't feel you can ask them, ask your dentist or hygienist at your next dental appointment, after all, evaluating oral conditions is part of their job. If you find this type of question is too personal to ask an adult, don't overlook asking a child. If your children are as uninhibited like my son you'll get an honest re-sponse.

There are ways you can objectively smell your own breath. However, you have to take a slightly indirect route.

Try this technique. Lick your wrist, wait about five seconds while the saliva dries somewhat, and then smell it. What do you think?

That's the way you smell. Or, more precisely, that's the way the end of your tongue smells (your tongue's "anterior" portion). How was it? Did you pass this first check?

Now try this second experiment. It will check the odour associated with the back portion of your tongue (your tongue's "posterior" aspect). Take a spoon, turn it upside down, and use it to scrape the very back portion of your tongue. (Don't be surprised if you find you have an active gag reflex.) Take a look at the material that has been scrapped off, usually it's a thick whitish material.

Now, take a whiff of it. Not so bad? Pretty nasty? This smell, as opposed to the sampling from the anterior portion of your tongue, is probably the way your breath smells to others.

Most people overlook cleaning their tongue but doing this on a regular basis can be the single most beneficial treatment for bad breath (halitosis) that a person can institute.

The smell of the anterior portion of a person's tongue is usually less offensive than the smell found emanating from the posterior part.

The reason for this is related to the fact that the anterior portion of the tongue is somewhat self-cleansing and therefore less likely to harbour large numbers of odour producing bacteria. Many tongue functions require that the front portion of the tongue touches firmly against the hard palate. This friction produces a cleansing action, therefore preventing any significant bacterial accumulation.

There are various techniques that you can use to clean the posterior portion of your tongue. Each of these methods, however, has the same goal, to scrape away the bacteria and debris that have accumulated on your tongue's surface.

No matter which method of tongue cleaning you choose to use, you should try to clean as far back on your tongue as possible. Don't be surprised if you find you have an active gag reflex. Gagging is a natural reaction but with time the intensity of this reflex should diminish.
